WPSA - GHANA BRANCH

The origin of the World's Poultry Science Association goes back to the early years of the 20th century with the foundation of the International Association of Poultry Instructors on July 18, 1912. The World's Poultry Science Association is a non-profit making organization, long established and unique organization that strives to advance knowledge and understanding of all aspects of poultry science and the poultry industry.

Its major role is to encourage, and help facilitate, liaison among research scientists and educators, and between those in research and education and those working in the many diverse sectors of the industry.

With a large and truly international membership of 8,000, the organization's objectives are promoted in various ways. These range from high-profile international congresses and conferences to the many diverse meetings organized by WPSA national branches (of which there are about 80) and two federations of branches - in Europe and in the Asia-Pacific region.

Within the Association there are many working groups and committees covering various aspects of poultry science and technology. Dedication to the spread of knowledge, education and training is ranked highly amongst the interests of WPSA members.

Ghana Branch



Ghana was accepted into the WPSA after a Ghanaian – Comfort Kyerewa Acheampong presented a Paper that was adjudged the second best Worldwide (SILVER AWARD) at the 20th World Poultry Congress (WPC) that was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands in September, 1994. Ghana became the 51st member country to be enrolled in the WPSA.



As a result the World President for WPSA, Dr. Piet Simons travelled to Ghana to inaugurate the Ghana Branch on 29th February, 1996 at the British Council Hall in Accra. This all important event was under the Chairmanship of Mr. Ibrahim Adams, the Minister of Food and Agriculture during the reign of President J.J, Rawlings.

Mr. Mike Akyeampong, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture at that time was elected the first President of the WPSAGHB and Comfort was made the Secretary with 15 registered members. Dr. Francis Boakye, CEO of Frankatson Company became the next President with Dr. George Anku as the Vice when the Kuffuor administration came into power till his demise in 2012.



The President of the 60 Member WPSAGHB is now Prof. Kwaku Adomako at the Department of Animal Science of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
